  1. And do we ever appreciate that. because in the craziness of a buyer's market, only those tough as roaches will be left.
From the top, with the time to actual publication of the book 2-5 years from the time it is accepted, writers must guess what an agent might want, without having any idea what else he has accepted over the last few years, or where he thinks trends might go, or whether his webiste has been updated since God made dirt, and come up with something fresh different that the agent KNOWS will be a best sellper, then spend a gazillion dollars attending a conference in order to show off one's People magazine personality and sell him the concept, AND agree to waste a year writing a book that has less than a one per cent chance of being accepted, and then has a few weeks to make it or sink. No advance, author agrees to buy back thousands of copies that don't sell, and do all publicity at his own expense, 2nd and 3rd mortgages on the house are common, I hear.
Geez Scott, as they say, it sounds a lo like having fun. Only different.
Luckily I AM tough as a roach, and I like the odds here, but my heart goes out to those who falter along the way. She's a long road. Check out Brunonia Barry who says she spent over $50,000 of her own money promoting her book, and I hear that is a drop in the bucket on this trek.
As for Stephanie Meyer, I agree. Brilliant move! She deserves every good thing that happens for her. i await her blockbuster movie, and thank you as always for your truthfulness in this department.
