Great Opening Lines and paragraphs

We have always said opening lines are great. It is this start that gets the reader interested in really wanting to see more.

So what are some of your favorites? Just give us the author, title of the book and what makes it unique. No need to write the whole thing out. Have us go take a look at it.

  1. My favorite opening lines are - from a couple of my books!!
From A GOLDEN FOREVER (available now):

The night he latched the flapping door on the fly of his pants didn't differ much from any other night during the ton season.

From A SIXTH SENSE OF FOREVER (available soon):
“Sex lessons? You want me to give your sister sex lessons?”

Come on, what other opening lines or paragraphs are going to stick with you as much the ones you write? Well, except for those drilled into your head during high school English......It was the best of times, it was the worst of times....(sounds like my writing career)!

  2. My time for pleasure reading is limited, and a good opening line will make me pause and read on instead of closing the book and putting it back on the shelf. Here's one of my favorites:

"It was only a matter of time before the wedding guests killed one another." THE GIFT, by Julie Garwood, 1991. That line makes me laugh just thinking of it! ~Sherrie Holmes

  3. Hands down, no questions asked: Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.

"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."
It says so much in just a few words. Why does she dream about it? Why would that be a big deal? It's such a great hook.

(And as a total aside, my word verification is winterrh. How perfect is that?)
