Mediocrity - This is the one single word that will bring the death to your entire writing career. As a professional writer, you simply cannot survive with putting out a product that is "just OK." TRUE professional writers insure that the work that is sent to their editors is the best they can produce. There are no exceptions to this rule!
As an agent, I am often very disappointed when I see writers living off of their name alone. They produce garbage (and yes, these are harsh words) but expect that their following will buy the material regardless. Whether you are a new writer or an established writer, you have to know that the work you are sending out is the best you can write. There are no exceptions.
If you are a brand new writer, don't go shipping out your manuscript to editors and agents just because it is finished. Is this YOUR BEST? If not, don't send it.
If you are a published author, are you writing your best? If not, then fix it or take some time off and get your head in the game. You are a role model for a lot of people.
I think Hallmark said it the best - "When you care enough to send your very best."
Is what you are getting ready to send to your editor, agent or potential editor or agent your very best. If not, do not waste your time.

This has been a great series. I'm going to try to gather them all together and read them a few of times a year at least.
