Words struggle to come forth
                as we grapple with feelings and emotions
                we never dreamt we would face.

Hallways that were once filled with joyous laughter,
                 giggling,
                 and harmless gossip
Are now filled with shadows of shattered dreams and futures.
Taken away in seconds to few to count.

Under the evergreen boughs of a season that celebrates life
                and innocence,
Now lay unopened presents and surprises.
For so many now, there will be no laughter on that Christmas morning.
               No excitement over explosions of wrapping paper and tinsel.

In times like this,
               we have to close our eyes,
                         sending out thoughts of love and peace to those who hurt.
               To hug those close to us.
And cherish what we have.
