Agents Are Human

I saw a great Twitter feed yesterday from another agent. She was talking about the myth that a lot of agents only go out and represent people who will make them a lot of money. While we all would love this, the reality is what she goes on to say. We sign authors because we believe in their writing and their compassion about their craft. We are humans looking at writers and not simply people who look at incoming royalty sheets and deals.

But she takes it another step. She recognized what a lot of people around the US are seeing. The Covid-19 Crisis really created challenges for a lot of us. We have juggled family schedules while keeping the agency running. We have attempted to talk to editors while at the same time, working with our kids on Zoom Meetings with their teachers and working with them on math that we might not be that great at. Agents are real people with real lives.

I was thinking about this as I started thinking about blogs this week. It has been a while since I was online posting here or on other social media platforms. What do others think? Probably "Oh he is on vacation." Nope. It was real life:

  • Since March, I have made two cross-country drives to get my kids from Washington State to New York to get them to their colleges.
  • Getting my youngest ready for starting her year as a sophomore in high school.
  • Helping my family out after my father-in-law passed away
  • Making sure my daughter's (she is at college) horse has a great place to help other riders while she is away at school.
  • Making sure my wife has time to work on her teaching. She is a college instructor and teachers during the summer (Just a note, she has not had a summer off for at least 15+ years).
Yes, we do other things. But know that we are still 100% out there looking for great authors and are determined to insure that the publishing world is as strong as ever.
