Learning from Pooh

I love Pooh! Like many pieces of children's literature, we can always learn something about ourselves, buy simply reading the words that so many think are "silly." I went back to one of my favorite books today for some inspiration. THE LITTLE BOOK OF POOHISMS.

Pooh reminds us "I always get to where I am going by walking away from where I have been." Ahh, Pooh...spoken like a true philosopher.

And yet, he is so right.

My wife is always commenting on her students that if they keep doing what they are doing, they will always end up with the same results. Again, so true! And yet, in publishing, authors are not thinking like Pooh. They are not walking away from where they have been.

Look, if things are not working for you and all you get are constant rejections from editors and agents, it is time to walk away from where you are. No, this does not necessarily mean giving up writing. It simply means it is time to do something different.

If that approach to your plotting is not working, walk away from where you have been.

If that approach to sending out query letters is not working, walk away from where you have been.

You should be learning from your mistakes. Pay attention to what works and doesn't work. Keep the things that are working and toss out the things that are not working.

You might find a little success with your career!
