What is going on in education?

As most of you know, I work as an adjunct English Composition instructor. I am now in the second week of classes, many of which are advanced composition classes and I am being hit with question such as?

What is an introduction?
What is a conclusion?
Do we need these?
I have never written a thesis before? What is this?
We have never discussed APA, MLA or CMS before, do I need to even cite anything.

ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!! What did these prior teachers cover? I'm talking the 101 instructors as well as high school. Do they do anything any more other than sit around and read essays from the Bedford reader and that's it?

Last time I checked, Composition meant writing, not a basic version of literature classes? It seems that many of these instructors must be bitter that they aren't teaching lit classes so this is their way of making up for their weaknesses.

  1. It has been my experience that when people are told things and they move forward, they weren't listening in the first place. Or, they were listening, and are just trying to get out of doing what is expected.

I can tell you stories of patients who don't want to follow instructions, either. Makes our job so much more difficult.
