You have been working away on your current project, whatever that might be, and then suddenly, all over the loops there is a sudden rush for some new genre. What do you do?
The answer, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! (there is one exception to this but I will mention it later).
These are trends and I have to say writers, by the time you are hearing about it, the media has already been in the works with it for at least a year. If you don't have a story already to go, in that genre, now is not the time to start writing the darn thing. Assuming you are a fast writer AND someone that already reads that genre voraciously, AND someone that understands all the nuances of it, you will fail horribly. Sorry to break that to you.
About 1-2 years ago, I had murmers of a few writers trying to revived the Steampunk movement into a more mainstream line, especially in romance. Yes, it was out there and yes people loved it, but it wasn't quite there. I have to say, in the last three days, I have heard nothing but Steampunk. Articles, Tweets, Blogs and a ton of books already on the shelf in that genre. Again, if you think about it, the time it would take to draft a story like that, you would already be behind the curve from those authors that already have a story ready to go.
Now, what happens to the market when we hit some genre like this? It is simply flooded. Think Chick Lit. Think Sweet Regencies. Think Erotica, Think Were's and Vamps. Get the idea.
So, what do you do when you see a trend. Just keep writing. The cycle will return at some point. Heck, maybe that project you are working on will never be published. But... you kept writing, you kept your brain going and who knows, maybe that project will get you thinking of a new story idea that will be in that cutting edge new genre.
