ABC's of Writing - (V)ary Your Writing Schedule Every Now And Then

We talk a lot about making sure to have your writing schedule consistent and a part of your daily life all year. With that said, there are going to be times that you find yourself facing that great big barrier called WRITER'S BLOCK. It's ugly, and we all hate it. However, there is a great solution for this.

Vary your writing schedule. Yes we want you to write and work on your craft daily, but every now and then, shaking things up will really knock out those cobwebs in your brain. In other words, by not working on your current work in progress, sometimes working on something else is just what you need to find that solution you were looking for.

One of my writers was stuggling with a series she had been working on. Things just seemed to be going no where fast. When we talked about it, we decided the best thing to do was to put aside the project and work on something else for a while. That time off did just what we needed. Her brain had a break without the pressure of an immediate deadline and that gave her a chance to work out the problems in the context of another story. When she did get back to the original work in progress, things worked out much better.

So, how do you vary your writing schedule and career to keep your creative juices flowing? Share your ideas today!

  1. I find if day-to-day life has become too much of a routine my stories starts stalling. Taking my writing on the road works every time but barring that I take a break from my evening schedule and do something different like going to an information session at the local library on a topic that I'm not familiar with, attending a group meeting for the first time, etc. Just some event, no matter how small, that I wouldn't normally go to. And if that doesn't work I either skip ahead to another chapter in the story or start working on another project or something completely different like the admin/promotion side of things and soon the first story starts luring me back.
