I am going to keep this one short today because I have a short window between rain storms and I want to get out and get some work done in the yard today (you work outside in the PNW when you can!).
First of all, if you use a name, make sure to explain how and why your book is similar. For example, "This novel is very similar to that of XYZ author's novel Sequoia Cove and how she draws the reader in to the small town atmosphere with her descriptions of Central Avenue and how everyone meets up every Sunday at Sam's Diner." Doing this shows that you have taken the time to do your research and you are getting us to think about that book a bit more, even f we have not read that other novel. We can still picture that scene.
Secondly, make sure if you are using several authors as comps, that these authors are similar. Telling me that your book has the world building of Harry Potter but the terror of Stephen King is ridiculous. These two people are not the same. Along the same lines, DO NOT compare yourself to someone far above you and your writing. If you are NOT Zora Neale Hurston. You might wish to be, but you are not.
Finally, DO NOT spend your time making references to obscure authors that only people who think they are totally cool and hip read. If you throw out names we don't know, you aren't helping yourself.
Look, if you don't know who you can compare yourself to, then don't include any comps. If you can, use 'em. They are so worth it.
Now, go out there and have a great weekend. I am off to mow the lawn!
