When It Rains, It Pours

As you think about entering the publishing world, let me just tell you that things will not go as you had envisioned in your head. This is truly a business of hurry up and wait. This is also a business that, I can guarantee you, will kick you in the butt when you least suspect it.

As an agent, this is happening right now.

I really had visions of great things happening this week. No, don't get me wrong. This was not a bad week, but I had a lot of things on my to-do list that, as of the time of this post, are still there. Why? Other things got in the way. Suddenly, I had three clients who needed manuscripts read. Without the feedback, their life comes to a screeching stop (well maybe not that bad, but they needed the feedback). Add to that suddenly business offices were sending me new contracts to review and move on, a university wanting to have me work for them in a great professional publishing program (yes they needed paperwork due)...

And then real life shows up.

You will find that there are weeks when nothing is happening and you think, "Gosh, I wish things would pick up."

Oh I promise you, things will pick up, but that will happen when you are already booked.

One of my authors often comments that she thinks her editor knows when she is getting ready to do something. The moment she has a great idea for a story or the next scene, sure enough her edits and revisions show up. The moment she gets ready to do something else, sure enough, here comes a new project, or the art fact sheet, or a blog tour.

So, if you are a new author thinking life is just going to be similar to those authors you see on the television or the movies who just have "the time to leisurely write", dream on. It simply is not going to happen that way.

Now, off to my to-do list so I might end up with a good weekend.
