Alien Vampire Bunny Contest - The top 2!

I decided to go with these two for a couple of reasons. I think both really demonstrate some creativity, but also give us something to work with when it comes to the writing craft.

1st Place "How To Escape Your Pet" - New Adult

BLURB: Twenty-year-old Christy Andrews has always thought a bunny lifestyle was the way to go, until she walks in on her favorite pet bunny talking on a radio transmitter. She gets bit and tied up, and learns the real reason behind bunnies’ quick reproduction: they’re not having sex and making babies, they’re biting other animals and turning them into an army of alien vampire bunnies ready to take over the world. But when she doesn’t change into one of them, she suddenly becomes their main target, and might have to break her no-strings-attached rule if she wants to get out of this alive.
The biggest disappointment of my life was the moment Alfred bit me. It wasn’t that I didn’t think my bunny would bite. It wasn’t about trust in my own pet, or even about the blinding pain. The most disappointing thing of all was to realize I had been living my life with a skewed perception of the world. This was why there were so many of them. Not from all the sex, but from biting other animals with their little vampire teeth so their alien race could take over the world. How does a girl get over that?
The thing is, bunnies were the reason I first got a lesson on reproduction. Dad wouldn’t let me keep the perfectly white little friend I’d won as a prize at the Carnival because, as he put it, “The damn things reproduce like crazy and I don’t want a hundred of these crapping all over my yard in six months.”
Of course he wouldn’t be there in six months anyway, since he left seven weeks later (and Mom bought me a bunny to ease the pain). But at the time, with all the innocence of my six years of age, the thought of multiplying furry friends was all that occupied my mind. “Mommy, how would he turn into a hundred in six months? How can we make that happen?”
The lesson was awkward as it probably always is, and not that remarkable. But there was one thing I got from it: bunnies don’t live very long, and that’s why they reproduce faster than humans. Humans live long enough to screw things up. Bunnies just… Well, they just screw. They enjoy their short lives to the fullest by having as much sex as they can, all the time. That’s simply fantastic.
Their life style has been my goal all throughout my teens, and I thoroughly intended to keep it that way for the rest of my twenties. (Without the reproducing part, of course. The idea of a hundred of me does not sound very appealing.) I had my red-eyed pets in my dorm room and all sorts of guys in their dorm rooms. No strings attached. Life was simple. Until I walked on my favorite bunny talking into some fancy radio transmitter thing. Let me rephrase that: my alien vampire bunny. And now I’m bit and tied up in my room among the piles of laundry that litter my floor.
“Lieutenant Aldamon reporting to Mother Ship. We have a code four here. Repeating, Mother Ship, we have a code four here.” Albert sounds like Humphrey Bogart. I’d expected more of a Bugs Bunny voice, but my vampire alien pet sounds like the guy in Casablanca. I don’t think life gets any creepier than this.
He turns to Eleanor, my youngest one, who hasn’t taken her eyes off of me for a second. “Still nothing?” he asks. She shakes her head. Albert, who seems to be their leader, puts the radio thing down and studies me with narrow eyes. I smile. Maybe they’ll let me go if I’m nice.
“That’s not possible,” Albert (aka Aldamon) mumbles, taking a few steps in my direction. He scrunches his face as he inspects every part of me. Apparently unsatisfied with what he sees, he motions for Eleanor to come over. “You try.”
I scream as her pointy little teeth sink onto my thigh, and Albert slaps me hard on the face. “Shut up, Christy.”
I’m stunned. “Albie, come on. You can’t possibly think I’m going to turn into a vampire alien bunny. That doesn’t make any sense!” Because my pets talking on radios and tying me up? Yeah, that’s completely logical.
Albert brings his front paw to my nose. “Don’t. Call me. Albie,” he roars. “And I’m not explaining it to you again. You heard me the first three times. I’m not your bunny. ‘Eleanor’ is not my daughter.” He rolls his eyes as he exaggerates the air quotes. I always thought I’d picked clever names… “She’s someone I changed. Used to be your next door neighbor’s cat, actually.”
I gasp. Lilly was my accomplice, the only other person hiding a pet in the dorms. I can’t believe Albert took her cat.
“And you’ll change too. I don’t know what’s taking so long…”
The radio buzzes with static. “Lieutenant Aldamon, do you confirm a code four?”
“Yes, sir. It’s been three hours and twenty eight minutes since the human was first bit. She was bit again by a changed five minutes ago. Still not working.”
The voice on the other side curses. “Human? Your assigned human?”
Albert grimaces. “Yes, sir,” he says a lot less confidently. “Christy Andrews. She walked in on me and…”
He’s interrupted by more swearing. Who knew bunnies could be so brash. “If she doesn’t change in half an hour, eliminate the human. And try not to mess that up!”
All four bunnies in the room stare at me. Okay, that does not sound good at all. If this is a dream, this would be an excellent moment to wake up.
Each of the stories really had some positives and negatives. In the case of the first one, it was the dialogue that stood out. I did find that the opening narration tended to really drag and I think it would have been much stronger to start with the dialogue, and then, if we needed the narration, add it throughout. This is actually something I see a lot of writers doing - blocks of narration and then blocks of dialogue. Mixing it up every now and then gives the reader the insight they need at that moment, instead of trying to hold on to that block of narration in their head while they read the dialogue.
I would also say that we would need to know a bit more about these AVB's. These guys seem pretty cool but we need to know a bit more.
I would also add that I felt that Christy is reacting a bit too calm with this situation. If you were in a state like this, would you be calm?
2nd Place "Conejo Vampiro Extranjero" - Inspirational

Blurb: When Sister Beatrice discovers the parish priest of Presidio’s Good Shepherd Church has secretly been indoctrinated by a Mexican vampire cartel, she’s faced with a choice: unmask the deception or continue to quietly do the work of God in helping the immigrant alien vampire bunnies who flood across the border to escape the violence.

In the den near the church in Presidio, the refugee alien vampire bunnies gathered. Sweating through their thick fur in the west Texas sun, they were thankful to have escaped capture by the Mexican vampire cartel. The same couldn’t be said for several of their family members, who had been seized and skinned as a message to other evacuees. This brave warren did not heed the warning.
The Texas-Mexico drug wars had created panic on both sides of the border, and the Mexican vampire cartel were out for more than blood. They had driven the frightened bunnies across the Rio Grande because there would not be enough blood to feed both groups. This salty Texas town at the end of highway 170, the bunnies thought, might be a sanctuary where they could make a fresh start. Now, these bunnies on the run were illegals: aliens on U.S. soil.
Conservatives would cry, “That’s why we need a wall.” The bunnies could already hear the arguments in their heads as they ran. But there was no wall. The free soil around Presidio was a beacon. Thirsty tongues panted in exhaustion for sangre.
The shadow of the limestone hewn crucifix outside Good Shepard Catholic Church cast cool shade, and the bunnies caught their breath. The congregation would provide a steady stream of nourishment for the alien vampire bunnies.
But the cartel knew they couldn’t let the bunnies escape that easily, even on what seemed like refugee territory. Procreation by the bunnies was the biggest threat to the Mexican blood supply. The bunnies’ ever-increasing numbers would threaten the cartel’s very existence. Fear was the biggest motivator for driving the bunnies out.
Inside the church, Sister Beatrice was finishing her last decade of the rosary. That morning, the congregation had offered prayers for an end to border violence; her rosary was prayed silently for that end as well.
She made the sign of the cross, rose from the pew, and glanced at her watch: 2 p.m. The bunnies, she thought, should have arrived by now. She genuflected as she exited and stepped gingerly out the wooden double doors of the church’s foyer. Her hand shielded her eyes in reaction to the sun outside as she surveyed the drought-stricken grounds. She knew they had to be there somewhere.
“My bunnies,” she mouthed with a relieved breath upon seeing a mass of fur protruding from the makeshift den near the crucifix. “God has brought them to me.” She knew, however, that she had to act quickly. She ducked back into the church so she could retrieve the supplies she had readied for their arrival. Father Alvarez stepped from the rectory and caught her arm in surprise.
“May I help you with something?” he inquired, holding tight at her elbow. The fabric of her habit stretched taut under his sudden grasp.
“They have arrived,” she whispered sheepishly, not meeting his eyes. “I must help them.”
“Don’t bring them in this church,” Father Alvarez threatened. “We don’t know if they’ve been tainted by the cartels. I told you not to disrespect this house of God with their presence.”
“But Father,” pleaded Beatrice. “They need refuge. They—” she stammered, searching frantically for words he’d understand. “They need us.”
Es no importante!” spat Father Alvarez. “Let us no more enable their greed.”
“Greed?” questioned Beatrice aloud. “Do you really think—,” and that’s when the inconsistencies of his pastoral leadership since his reassignment to Good Shepherd started to align. The missing checks from the collection plate, the cancellation of the adult education courses, the clandestine confessions held after dark: these were all in an attempt to support the very cartel from whom the alien vampire bunnies were fleeing.
“The Mexican cartel,” Beatrice began with eyes locked to Father Alvarez in disbelief. “They’ve already gotten to you.”
If ever Sister Beatrice needed the strength of God, it was now.
This one stands out mostly for the great writing. I put it second because this really doesn't come across as an inspirational story but more of something with a strong general fiction feel.
Like the first story, I do feel that I need to know a bit more about the characters and the situation. It seems like there was too much time spent on the Cartel side of things and not enough on the AVB's and why Beatrice has such an investment.
In this case, the balance between the narration and the dialogue that was missing in the first one showed up here.

Congratulations to both of you. Send me an email at the agency (the main email and not the contest one) and I can give you the guidelines on what to send and how to send the partial you want critiqued. In the subject line, simply write AVB Winner.

Alien Vampire Bunny Contest Opens To Submissions TODAY!

Several years ago, I created the Alien Vampire Bunny Contest here at Greyhaus. The idea stemmed from a conversation I had with the late Kate Duffy during a panel discussion. At that time, she said she would pretty much look at any project, however, there was no way she would ever look at a story about Alien Vampire Bunnies. I jokingly said I would find her a story one day. O.K. I haven't yet.

To honor the work of Ms. Duffy, I created the contest.

I will have more details up on the website shortly, but this is a great place to launch the idea and get you thinking.

THE CONTEST:
Authors will write three pages of an Alien Vampire Story. This year, the three pages do not have to be the first three pages of the story, simply any three pages. Those three pages have to showcase the Alien Vampire  Bunnies.

This year, I am creating three categories: Historical, Steampunk, New Adult. Stories must also showcase the voice and style of that particular genre of writing.

I should also note that writers cannot simply call a group of people Alien Vampire Bunnies (for example, a gang or a club)..

There can be only one entry for a writer.

When submitting, the format will be as follows:

  • 12 pt. Times New Roman
  • Double Spaced
  • Rich Text Format
Writers will submit with the story itself

  • Title
  • Genre
  • 2-3 sentence blurb about the potential book.
Submissions will be open on Oct. 1 and will run throughout Oct. 31.

I will have one winner from each of the genres. However, to do so, I will need to have at least 5 entries for each of the genres. Should the number be less, then I will combine the categories and announce only one winner.

The winner of the contest will receive a written critique and phone conversation of a partial of one of their other works. That would be roughly 3 chapters.

Again, more information will be posted on the website later. (Still waiting to get my computer back from the shop). At that time, the email about where to send the submissions will also be available.

Alien Vampire Bunny Contest Winner

I thought I would post for all of you the readings. These really showed great talent this year! These were posted in no particular order. I also want to thank those of you who donated to the RWA National Kate Duffy Memorial Scholarship Fund!

Elicia M. Seawell
The Thirst

The sun set in shades of orange and purple over the horizon and leaves fell into piles in the yards of the townspeople. Parents chased behind children up and down the streets as Trick-Or-Treating began. Kids dressed in pirate costumes, vampires and other scary creatures, ran up and down steps, ringing doorbells and waited for candy handouts.
One by one, as their bags filled, the children scurried down the street to the next house and everything seemed normal
- a typical Halloween night. However, something lurked in the brush watching the children and waiting for the dark to come.
                The creature
s matted black fur blended in with the darkness. No one paid attention to the threat that watched through its green and red eyes. He knew what he wanted and patience was never something he was accustomed to. He pulled one of his long ears down to clean it, pulling it between his front paws and licking. His sharp teeth didnt fit his small mouth and stuck out far beyond his bottom jaw. A child screamed in the background but it didnt faze the animal.
As the streets began to clear, the rabbit decided it was time to move towards its prey. He already knew the destination and the victim. His goal was very clear
- infect the children. The small humans would be the carrier according to the plan. Earth was the new breeding ground for these aliens and no one would ever know the destruction these small creatures could create until it was too late.
He hopped across the yard to the open window that awaited him. He watched for two nights to study the patterns of this small child. He went to bed at nine sharp every night and lifted the window just before he crawled into bed. The rabbit knew that he would be asleep by now and as he hopped through the window, he came into contact with the first carrier of the AVB disease.
Carefully, the rabbit nestled into the covers and tried his hardest to not disturb the boy. He had to find an artery. This was the only way the disease could move through the system. In less than forty-eight hours, the child would be just like the rabbit
- ravenous, hungry and wanting blood. Not to mention the little one would become furry.
The alien rabbit licked a spot on the boy
s leg, numbing it with its venom. He would never even know the rabbit was about to clamp down. The rabbit waited for a moment, waiting for the venom to numb the spot completely and as the time approached, the rabbit bit down filling the arteries of the boy with the AVB disease.

Nell Musolf
Good with Blood

                 ”Cute, aren’t they?
Chelsea Sutton looked up when she heard the smooth, deep voice at her elbow and found herself looking into eyes that reminded her of the moon on a dark autumn night.

“Adorable, she agreed, nodding toward the cage that contained at least half a dozen soft, fluffy bunnies. Im thinking of taking one home with me but Im not sure how my cat would like that.
If you kept it in a cage it would probably be fine. Im about to pick one out for myself. Im thinking of that grey one in the corner. The man pointed toward a silvery bunny huddled next to a white one.
You cant. Thats the one I was thinking about getting, Chelsea said, giving him a small smile.
Ill tell you what: Ill let you take him, or her, if I can get visiting rights.
Chelseas smile grew broader. Shed never been hit on in a pet store before and it had been ages since shed been hit on by anyone as handsome as the man standing next to her. I might be able to discuss legal ramifications over a latte, she suggested.
Fifteen minutes later, Chelsea sat across from the dark haired man who had told her that his name was Tyler Williams, her newly purchased bunny huddled on her lap beneath her protective hand.
Shes trembling,she told Tyler.
Im sure shes scared out of her mind. Rabbits can be high strung creatures. Tyler stirred three packets of sugar in his coffee before catching Chelseas surprised stared.  Energy food,he explained. I never seem to have any energy these days.
He was pale but he wore his pallor well. He wore everything well, from the grey cashmere sweater he had on to the perfectly worn jeans. Chelsea patted the bunny warmly. I owe you, bunny rabbit. I never would have met such a cute guy if I hadnt spotted you in the window.

Ouch! Chelsea pulled her hand away and stared at her right forefinger where a tiny bead of blood appeared. She bit me!
Let me see that. Tyler took her hand and squeezed her finger tightly. If you can get the blood to flow quickly maybe you wont get an infection. You should go wash that bite right now.
Reluctantly pulling her hand out of Tylers grip, Chelsea put the rabbit back into the small box the pet store had given her and got to her feet. The bite wasnt big but it seemed to have gone deeply into her finger and she suddenly felt light headed and more than a little strange. Ive never been very good with blood, she said. Chelsea noticed that Tylers hand was smeared with blood from her cut.     Oh, Im sorry. Ill bring you a wet paper towel from the bathroom.
Tylers gaze met her eyes and held them with a magnetism that almost knocked her off her feet.        Dont worry, he assured her. Blood doesnt bother me at all.

Donna Monahan
Don't Call Me Bunny

                “Hey, wake up!

The sound of a deep gravelly voice coming from the foot of my bed woke me instantly. My body completely froze in fear.
I know youre awake. I dont have all night.
I took a deep breath and opened my eyes to see what fate had brought my way. I
ve always had a fear of being killed by intruders. People always told me I was being paranoid but maybe not so much huh? The idea of telling them all I told you so gave me a just the slightest consolation if I didnt actually die tonight.
Looking around my still dark room to locate the voice it was hard to make it anything out but there appeared to be someone in a bunny costume sitting in the chair near my window. The smell of pot hit my nose just as he lifted a blunt to his lips and inhaled. The intake lit up his face and I realized quickly that this wasn
t a costume but a very large bunny.
Are you a bunny?” I sat there in shock not believing what I saw and wondered if I had already been drugged in my sleep.
Im a rabbit. I dont like the term bunny. He took another puff and gestured to offer the joint to me.
I shook my head no and tried to get a grasp on the situation. My head felt clear but this couldn
t possibly be real.
Why are you sitting in my room? Who are you?
My name is Frank and Ive got a bit of an issue. Im not from around here. Frank leaned forward in his seat and rested his arms on his legs as he watched my reaction.
          Why are you here though?
My ride crapped out as I was passing over.
          Passing over where?
          Earth.
I laid back in my bed and closed my eyes telling myself that there wasnt a big rabbit sitting in my room smoking pot.
Oh no, youre not going to get all dramatic on me now are you? I swear you chicks are all the same.
You are a large alien bunny sitting in my room. I think that dramatics are perfectly acceptable under the current conditions.
Fine, flip out. How long is this going to take? Ball park estimate. An hour? Two? He stood and walked toward my bedroom door.
Are you leaving? I asked with unconcealed hope in my voice.
No, just going to watch some TV. I cant leave. Youre the only one that can get me out of this hell hole.
I watched his furry brown back as he walked out of the room. I laid there for all of two minutes before I heard a screeching sound coming from my backyard. Jumping up I ran to the open window and saw Frank sucking a raccoon dry.
He looked up at me and smiled a weird rabbit smile.
Pot makes me hungry.

Janet  Wrenn
Paper Trail

A stout figure hopped along the aisle towards Emma’s booth. Donning a crushed fedora and a mass dingy fur, its glowing green eyes pierced her stare. Color drained from Emma’s face as her heart roller-coastered through her insides.
“Kay!” Emma shouted, “I need your order pad and pen, hurry!”
“What on earth for?” she muttered.
The desperation in Emma’s voice manifested in her face and Kay tossed the tablet and pen to her. She leapt out of the booth and caught the tablet, nearly missing the pen. Barrel rolling along the floor, she scribbled furiously as she landed behind the counter next to Kay.
Jumping up, Emma ripped off the top sheet from the order pad, crumpled it into a ball and blew on it sending it flying through the air. It soared through the room, slowly changing shape and form. It illuminated as it transformed from mere paper into a finely crafted two handed long sword; tumbling tip over hilt making its way back to her.
The sword planted its handle firmly against Emma's open palm and her fingers clamped shut around it. Her left hand drew up to the bottom of the pommel and she swung the large steel blade up around her head, twisting her arms so that the blade nearly rested on her right shoulder, tip pointed firmly between the eyes of the stranger glaring back at her.
Drawing in a gasp of air, the creature darted backward distancing himself from the cold hard steel.
“You can't hide, nor can you run forever.”  he said gruffly.
Thrusting out his paw, her body rose from the floor. Fighting through the excruciating pain, she clung to the sword ready to strike.
Every moment he held her, her power drained along with her very existence. With the last ounce of energy she possessed, she plunged the sword into the stranger’s throat. Choking, he dropped to the floor and in a shimmer his body disappeared.
Emma swallowed hard as she slid back down the side of the counter to the floor, like a melting scoop of ice cream. The sword felt heavy, laden with the liquid fear that surfaced from Emma's hand. No longer able to hold its burden she released the handle, causing it to roll off along the floor.
“What the hell was that?” Kay yelled as she scrambled over to Emma.
“That is Kadin.” she choked out.
“You mean, was Kadin.” Kay answered.
“No, is Kadin. That didn’t kill him; it’ll merely slow him down.” Emma said, struggling to catch her breath.
“Who or what is Kadin?” Kay demanded.
                “Well... he's Evil.” Emma murmured.
“That’s pretty obvious, along with psychotic.” she stated.
“No, I mean he is Evil, he’s the leader of the Alien Vampire Bunnies.” she said, sucking in a big breath of air.
“How do you know this?” she demanded.
“Because I wrote him that way.” Emma said, rolling her head to look Kay straight in the eyes.

Regan Loyd
Paradise is Feral
Talian and Rhea transported from the Planetary Runner to Kaurai. When Talian materialized onto a rocky outcrop, the scents on the planet embraced her. Musky living soil. Decaying jungle undergrowth. Cloyingly sweet carnivorous flowers. Combined they made her dizzy, drugging her.
                Talian began to feel whole.
She owed Rhea a debt for making her come here. That made them even.
Rhea shouldered her pack then led them into the jungle proper, theoretically toward their approved campsite. Watching her decide what non-existent path to take was entertaining.
Rhea was out to prove something; whether to herself, her mother, or humankind, Talian didn
t know. Talian feared Rhea would just prove her mother right: that only a fool hiked a reclaimed paradise planet. Rhea heard the word:  paradise. Talian heard: reclaimed, then bothered to wonder: reclaimed by what.
                Paradise was feral.
                Talian
s nose started bleeding, and she grinned. Shed stuck a super-absorbent handkerchief in a pocket, just in case.
But Rhea glanced back, and Talian couldn
t hide the cloth.
          Whats wrong?
Nosebleed. With her nose pinched, Talians voice sounded whiny even to her.
Rhea grabbed the bioscanner at her waist and examined Talian, frowning at the screen.
The blood vessels in your nose have dilated to the point of bursting, all along your sinus cavity. Ive never seen anything like it.
Youve never met anyone like me.
It must be an allergy. Rhea shrugged off her pack. I packed a couple histamine-suppressors.”
I expected it, Talian interrupted. Itll stop within an hour.
If youd warned me, I could have.”
Its not an allergy. If I pass out from blood loss, nag. Until then, we move. At this rate we wont make tonights camp until tomorrow.
Give me that cloth, I want to check.”
Leave off, Rhea. Or Ill lead.
          Youre such a…”
          Sarcastibitch?
“…riddle, Rhea finished, aiming the bioscanner at Talians face again.
Talian grabbed it and stomped into the lead, hand still pressed to her nose to avoid leaving a blood trail.
                Rhea caught up before she
d gone two hundred meters, at the same time that a loud crackling in the underbrush stopped Talian. Rhea tried to shove past.
          Stop.
                Rhea actually listened.
          What the hell is that?
You want a riddle? What weighs 30.1 kilos, is covered in brown fur, has two floppy ears, a fluffy round tail, meter-long fangs, ambulates by hopping, and is venomous?
An alien vampire bunny. Rhea held out her hand.
Talian returned the scanner. She didn
t need it to interpret the rustling underbrush around them. Whatever an alien vampire bunny was, it traveled in packs.  Eight or nine more. The rocky outcrop was too far for a reasonable retreat.
The leader leapt forward, covering a meter in one hop. When it landed, it started to purr.
          Its cute.
          Its foaming at the mouth.
Right. What now, bodyguard? Rhea asked.
Talian felt her eyes start to glow.
Dinner.

The Reincarnation of Phillip Black

Okay, he’d done some bad things when he was alive. Yes. But, damn it, an alien vampire bunny? That
s what hed been reincarnated as? A freakin’ pointy eared, green-eyed, razor toothed varmint who hopped!
                This must be hell.
Phillip Black landed on the ledge of Sarah
s window with a thud, letting the neon beam of his eyes light up the area where she was sleeping. His heart lifted in his throat and then the emotional scab that continuously formed over the reality of his death was ripped off. He felt breathless for a moment.
He
d never hold her, never run his hand down her long, thin arms and watch the smile curl on her lips again.
As he thought about it, Sarah smiled in her sleep. Was she thinking of him? Missing his touch as badly as his skin crawled for hers?
Then her bedroom door cracked, flooding white light in a pie-shaped sliver of space. Phillip
s ears perked as he watched the dark shadow move toward the woman he was set to marry before the accident.
The shadowed figure stood over the still smiling Sarah, watching her for a long, excruciating second. Then he took a step closer.
                Phillip
s blood heated to a boil as the intruders face caught the light.
Edward Lassetter. His business partner. His best friend. But why was...?
Edward pulled a rope from his pocket. The look on his face was unmistakable; it told Phillip exactly what would happen next. Murder.
With a forceful kick of his hind leg, Phillip shattered the window pane and targeted his body at Edward
s face.
                Sarah awoke with a scream.
                Edward
s hands fought to pry him off, but Phillips strength was like an angry grizzlys. Every bloodkill since his death had only made him stronger. Until tonight, hed only killed wildlife. Hed never killed a human. Until now.
His teeth sunk into his best friend
s neck until Edwards resistance slowed. Then his body dropped to the floor.
Sarah screamed louder. The shrill sound stung as it entered Phillip
s too sensitive ears. He met her wide-with-fear eyes. For a moment, something animalistic inside of him wondered what she would taste like. Smooth. Rich. Like the heaven his death, and rebirth, had denied him.
Im sorry. Dont be afraid, he said. His words came out as a squeal, sharper than any noise hed ever heard, including Sarahs ongoing screams.
Phillip looked at his friend's limp corpse as he leapt across the room to the window sill. He instinctively knew Edward was the reason he was dead. And that Sarah was next on the hit list. It hadn
t ended with Eddy. Edward was a good friend, but a better lover of money. Someone had paid him. That was the only explanation. And whoever wanted them dead, would keep sending their henchmen until Sarah was eliminated, just like he was.
I wont let that happen, Sarah, Phillip whispered as he disappeared into the cold December night. I promise you.

And the winner is...

Elicia M. Seawell
The Thirst

I do have to say, this was a tough one this year. Some added some great humor while others really were able to capture a great tone and voice.

Elicia, please make sure to contact me via email at the agency for details of the critique/

Alien Vampire Bunnies Writing Contest Winners!

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the stories coming in. When Kate Duffy first mentioned this idea, off-handedly, we were laughing about how “stupid” the idea potentially was. And yet, the writers submitting stories this year were able to over-come that barrier.
As promised, the winner of the contest receives a free critique of the first 100 pages of a story. The first place winner may should contact me via email for further information.
Also, this is for you editors out there. If you love a premise of the story, I will arrange to get it to you! I dare you!
Like I said, you all made it tough on me. Some were funny, some were dang serious. In the end, I was looking for the story that exemplified quality writing as well as meeting the criteria of the contest. In other words, the story had to be about Alien Vampire Bunnies.
First of all, I want to thank the following writers for just competing. This was a tough challenge but you still did it. Good for you!

• Deathright by Joely Sue Burkhart

• Untitled by Kelly McClean

• Dissociation by Monica Peters

• Untitled By Marilou Goodwin

• Blood Counts by Jan Mitchell

So, without further adieu…

1st Place…
My Love, the Alien Vampire Bunny by Ellie Nystrom
A paranormal romance about Maggie, a small town substitute teacher with a big secret. Namely, the alien vampire bunny whose space pod crashes into her backyard. Seeing his adorable little cottontail, she names him Peter, but then, after biting the pizza delivery man, he transforms into her dream man.
Coming from a race of blood sucking creatures known only as the Collective, Peter does not understand the value of the individual. Maggie teaches him to respect himself and become his own man. He teaches her to embrace her differences, which are substantial and not entirely human, and follow her heart. In the end, as bunnies in little space suits descend upon Earth to rescue their lost friend, Peter decides that being with someone who loves him for himself is better than rejoining his kind where he's just another nameless part of the whole.

2nd Place…
The Bunny Prophecy by Carolyn Carey
Two weeks ago, Marley Holland was just a super wealthy former English prof who’d won the lottery and had been wondering what to do with herself, other than encouraging her boyfriend in his efforts to translate the medieval writings of an esoteric German who had prophesized the arrival of a spaceship filled with vampire bunnies whose meat could cure any human vampires who consumed it. Connor is especially interested in the prophecy because his sister is a vampire. And unbeknownst to him, so is his girlfriend. Ten days ago, Marley was attacked and turned while perusing the ancient textbooks in the archives of the graduate library at the university where Connor teaches. Now she has a personal reason for seeking out those blasted bunnies.
With help from her chauffeur, Kooper, and an occasional assist from Connor, who’s positive he knows the time and place the spaceship will arrive, Marley engages in a frantic search for the flying rabbit hutch Kooper spotted one dark evening on a mountainous road. Dangers they never anticipated arise. Seems Connor wasn’t the only scholar trying to translate the works of Hasenpfeffer, but where Connor had read “vampire bunnies,” others have seen “golden nuggets.” By the time Marley succeeds in trapping one of the bunnies, Connor has been changed and she must use the precious rabbit stew to return her beloved to a normal life. Then it’s time for her and Kooper to begin their quest again, leaving behind the comforts of normalcy in their continuing search for alien vampire bunnies.

3rd Place
24 Carrot Blood by Candice Gilmer
Just because Gerald was a vampire bunny, didn’t mean he enjoyed his violent ways. When he comes upon an alternative to killing beings for nutrients on the planet Earth, he high-tails it to the small planet. Unfortunately the King and Queen follow, bringing their subjects to find Gerald, as well as explore the delectable beings on Earth.
Gerald enlists the help of Kandi Kayne, immortal Templar Knight, to find this True Blood he seeks. While Kandi and the other Templar Knights search for the blood substitute for Gerald, the King and Queen start their sampling of the blood offered on Earth, creating a string of deaths all over North America. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Kandi and the other Knights have to find a way to get the vampire bunnies off world, and still allow Gerald asylum on Earth. Especially since this blood substitute Gerald seeks may not exist.
