Don't Hate Me Because I Am Beautiful

Again, I was listing to my podcasts and the host was talking about all those "haters" out there omn social media who have this ultimate goal in life to slam those that are successful. The podcast host was specifically talking about those people who think that Rachel Ray, Emeril, Ina Garten and so forth are "not real chefs." This of course got me thinking about those people out there who slam
writers who have become successful.

Back in the 80's Pantene came out with a great commercial with the slogan, "Don't hate be because I'm beautiful." This is really at the heart of what we are talking about here.

I have heard writers slamming other writers when they see they made sales or are doing really well on the major Best Selling lists. Writers often make statements such as, "These aren't real writers, they just crank out formula stories." or, "Of course this person can write. Anyone can if they have other people writing for them." Sorry, but these are lame statements. These people have found a way to be successful. If you are not there yet, don't throw them under the bus.

Please understand, if a writer is doing something and you are not, there can be a lot of variables in play. The first is that the author just got to that point before you did. It just means you need a bit more time before you are there. It could be that the author has utilized the resources available and you have not. My recommendation is to start using those resources.

Maybe the author is writing in a genre that you do not write. So what? They are taking a different approach. Maybe the author writes in series romance and you are writing single title. Does this mean that they are doing something easier? No! Does this mean they have taken the easy way out? No! Does this mean they are not a strong writer? No! It means they found a way to be published and you are still looking for that niche.

This is a business where that jealousy monster can really get in the way of your success. Focus on writing those great stories. Focus on YOUR success. And if someone else is successful, find a way to support that success. Who knows, that person might be a pathway to your success, IF you quit being a hater.
