I had the news on this morning and there was an ad for a local medical center here in the Seattle area. The patient they were referring too had a great line that I think is relevant for authors. He stated his favorite word was "Yet." In his case, he was recovering from a stroke and was saying he couldn't hold a coffee cup, YET." Authors take note.
We are living in a world of immediate gratification. We want it and we want it now. This is part of the reason all of these self-pub companies and vanity presses are thriving today. This is also the reason why we are seeing so many people just starting their own "publishing companies." They want their book out there now and they want immediate success. And yet, so many struggle.
They are missing that word YET in their vocabulary.
You might be working on your book now and it is not finished...YET!
You may not have an agent...YET!
You may not have a publishing contract...YET!
You may not have one a major contest...YET!
Do you see the trend here? This is forward looking. This is future looking. We are not looking at the situation right now and demanding success, but looking to the future.
So, how do you get to YET? Take your time. Slow down. Learn. Develop as a writer. Grow. Don't be obsessed over those people around you who make it look like they have all of this great success. If they are new and finding fast success, it does not mean they will be around a long time.
I would also caution you to stay off of the social media if you want to really work with this YET Mentality. Remember, people tend to only post the good. Many over exaggerate their posts. Focus on you and know...
You may not have success not, but YET is still out there.
