We are all told to "write what we know." That is 100% true. However, I do believe that far too many authors are taking this to the extreme. In an attempt to "keep things real" they are trying to fictionalize their own personal stories. It seems reasonable. You know the story. You know the events. You know the emotions.
The problem though, is that you ONLY know one side of the story.
This is really an issue of being objective when you are writing.
Because you are personally invested in the project (remember, you are a character now) you will only write about the things that you believe are A) True; and B) Things you know.
But what about the other side of the story?
Let me stress, there is nothing wrong with using things that have happened in your own personal life for scenes, but unless you can truthfully separate yourself from what was really happening in the story, then you will have some problems.
Just a word of warning.
