I have now passed on 10 submissions of authors who clearly do not understand genres. Specifically, let's talk about NEW ADULT!
Apparently authors seem to define NEW ADULT FICTION as the following"
- NEW - I am a debut author
- ADULT - It is an adult story
- FICTION - It is Fiction
UMMMMMMMM, sorry!!!!!
New adult deals with the demographic of people heading off to college and in their first (maybe second year) after college.
New Adult defines that the characters are trying to become "New Adults". One editor I talked to defined it as that moment when the character says, "I just got my degree, now what the s#$%$#$%@$%R@#t do I do?" That pretty much sums it up.
Now, there are a lot of authors who believe New Adult is nothing more than YA with Sex. Again, not correct. These are stories about a transition in life. These can be romance or not. It is the general theme we are working with here.
