Writing is a craft and a skill. It takes time to become good at it. I know, that is seriously a "Captain Obvious" statement, but it is true. So, with that said, before you sit down to write that novel. Before you even keep writing that novel, take the time to learn to write.
Yes, that might sound a bit harsh, and I don't want it to be that during this time of year, but it is true. You have to understand why and how you use character, plot, setting and theme in your story. You have to understand how to make dialogue work for what you want to accomplish in your story. You have to be able to study another author and see exactly what makes that story tick or fail.
Too often, writers just sit down and start typing. The words just dump out of their heads and onto the computer screens. And then, when they submit and get a rejection, they become frustrated. Instead of figuring out why, they immediately convince themselves, or others will do so, saying it just wasn't quite right, or it wasn't the right fit. And then they sit down and write another novel doing the same thing.
I am not saying that you have to have a MFA in Creative Writing to be successful. I am not saying you need to be a certified writer. What I am saying is that writers need to learn the craft. And, as I always say, it takes time.
I don't like sending out rejection letters to authors just as much as you don't like receiving those letters. Taking that time to learn first will always help!
